DEVIL'S ISLAND, DVD
SUPER RARE BORIS KARLOFF
Boris Karloff stars in the rare film DEVIL'S ISLAND. 1940. Black & White.
"He escaped from a life worse than death... Devil’s Island... the last haven of horror for the fiercest criminals on earth!"
The year 1940 was a busy and prolific one for Karloff who appeared in a total of nine films for five different studios. As well as contributing his usual quota of screen monstrousness, he also portrayed interesting non horror characters in two releases for Warner Bros. The second of these, Devil’s Island, was actually produced in the summer of 1938. before he began work on Son of Frankenstein.
A totally different tale of horror, Devil’s Island was a look into the real-life horrors in the infamous penal colony in French Guiana. Shortly after the French government announced that it would close down the prison in 1937, producer Bryan Foy began preproduction plans for the film - selecting George Raft for the lead role. However, when plans to star Karloff in a film called ‘Witch’s Sabbath’ were scrapped because of a decline in the popularity of the horror genre, Foy decided to cast him as renowned surgeon Charles Gaudet.
Shooting began in the late summer of 1938 and the film was completed and ready for release in September. However, when the film finally premiered in late January 1939, it was denounced by the French government. Deciding to keep the penal colony open, the French launched a propaganda campaign against the film and placed a ban upon any future Warner Bros. releases. To avoid the huge financial loss Devil’s Island was pulled from circulation and remains a rarely screened item.
For treating a wounded revolutionary, respected brain surgeon Dr. Gaudet (Boris Karloff) is sentenced to the hellish French penal colony on Devil’s Island. There, he rebels against the inhuman conditions and incurs the wrath of the brutal commander, Colonel Lucien. When Lucien’s daughter is injured in an accident and only Gaudet can save her, the tables are turned...
Devil’s Island was the first film that allowed Karloff to portray a hero who is completely exonerated. Gaudet is a practicing physician in a completely realistic social context, not a research scientist dabbling in “things that men should leave alone...
